The series will highlight one individual on Page C1 every weekend through mid-August. “20 Under 40” is a partnership between the Fremont Area Chamber of Commerce and the Fremont Tribune. Those recognized were selected as a part of a nomination process and a multi-committee selection panel.
In a small town like Fremont, it’s the passionate individuals who weave the fabric of the community. One such individual is Jeremy Murman, an educator at Bergan Catholic Schools, a devoted musician, and a budding entrepreneur in lawn care. Over the past 11 years, Murman has become a cornerstone of the community, enriching the lives of students, parishioners, and neighbors alike.
A musical journey rooted in Nebraska

Born and raised near Glenvil, Nebraska, Murman’s upbringing on a farm instilled in him a strong work ethic and a love for the outdoors. He attended Hastings Catholic Schools and later Hastings College, where he pursued a bachelor’s degree in music education. A talented pianist and avid golfer, Murman’s collegiate years set the stage for his future in education and community involvement. His dedication to music continued with a master’s degree from the University of Florida in 2016.
An educator’s impact on students and the community
Murman’s teaching career began at Bergan Catholic in 2013, right out of college.
“I knew I wanted to be an educator during my senior year of high school,” Murman recalls, noting the influence of his own band teacher.
“During his time at Bergan Catholic, he has grown the instrumental music program exponentially,” said Dan Koening, President of Bergan Catholic. “When I first arrived at Bergan, we had a handful of students taking instrumental music courses at the middle and high school levels. This past school year, we had over seventy students taking middle or high school band courses and performing in concerts. This is a testament to the impact that his quality instruction is having on our school system.”
At Bergan, Murman wears many hats: he teaches third and fourth grade general music, 5-12 instrumental music, digital media, and heads the Striv Broadcast team, covering around 50 events annually. Following COVID, Bergan needed someone to run Striv. Murman volunteered to be that person.
Initially wanting to go into art, the digital media has helped Murman dive into his artistic abilities.
“Growing up, I used to write my own books and then I would illustrate them, and they were always about hunting and fishing or golf. I love it,” he said. “Like, ‘The Adventures of Steve’ was a series that was out there.”
Aside from learning broadcast and graphic creation through Striv, students are learning drone work, camera angels, audio voiceovers and more. Not only has this program served the students at Bergan, but it has opened an avenue for businesses to tap into the talent that is being produced as a part of this class. The members of this class have created several videos for area businesses to utilize on their websites and social media.
Murman’s role in digital media at Bergan has been particularly rewarding. Initially volunteering to lead the Striv Broadcast team, he now teaches a digital media class.
“It’s 100% real-world experience,” he said. “Students learn to troubleshoot live broadcasts, create graphics, and produce commercials, gaining valuable skills that can lead directly to career opportunities. This program has connected students with local businesses and community projects, enriching their educational experience and fostering community ties.”
Additionally, Murman accompanies the school choirs, serves as a church musician, leads a HOUSE group, and coaches the high school girls’ golf team. He said that what keeps him at Bergan, beyond the students and families, is the faculty and staff.
“From my first few days teaching I saw the investment they made in the school as whole, not just teaching their subject but coaching, helping other teachers and being there as a volunteer for whatever was needed. They taught me what true passion looks like and how to serve others,” he said.
“Jeremy exemplifies the qualities of an impactful educator,” Koenig said.” He is energetic, can relate to his students, has excellent knowledge of his subject area and is willing to do what it takes so that students can experience success. Like the majority of our staff at Bergan Catholic, he has a passion for his faith and shares his time and talent as an example of service to our school and parish. We are blessed to have talented individuals guiding the next generation of Jesus’s disciples here at Bergan Catholic. It is because of people like Jeremy Murman that Bergan Catholic School experiences such success.”
Community engagement and leadership
Beyond the classroom, Murman is deeply involved in the Fremont community. He serves as the President of St. Patrick’s Parish Council and plays piano for both St. Patrick’s Parish and Salem Lutheran Church. His commitment to the community extends to a new venture: a lawn care company named Spruce Up Lawns.
“I like to do things and needed to make a little bit extra,” Murman said. His agricultural background and love for outdoor work make this side business a natural fit.
Murman got his chemical applicators license last year. He was also curious about an LLC and went through the steps to create that as well. With creativity always at the forefront, Murman enjoyed the process of designing a logo for his new company.
Family and personal life
Murman married his wife, Jill, in 2017. Jill, also an educator, teaches band at Fremont Public Schools. Together, they are raising three children: Ella, 5; Patrick, 4; and William, 9 months. The Murmans cherish their life in Fremont, enjoying the small-town atmosphere and strong sense of community.
“Fremont is friendly and inviting, a great place for us to grow our family,” Murman said.
Murman’s hobbies include golfing, fishing, hunting and spending as much time outside as possible.
Looking ahead
Reflecting on his journey, Murman acknowledges the unique opportunities and challenges of his varied roles.
“I love being involved in lots of different things. The students, faculty, and staff at Bergan are incredible, and the support from the community is unwavering,” he said.
Murman’s favorite part of his job?
“Seeing the growth kids make over the years,” he said. “On each given day, a different age group seems to surprise me with their capabilities.”
Jeremy Murman exemplifies the spirit of dedication and versatility. Whether he’s teaching, playing piano, or sprucing up lawns, his contributions to Bergan Catholic and the Fremont community are invaluable. As he continues to inspire and lead, Fremont can look forward to many more years of his enthusiastic involvement and unwavering commitment.
