In the first quarter of 2024, the EU commercial vehicles (CV) market showed mixed results, but sales of electrically chargeable vans, trucks, and buses all grew.
New van sales increased by 12.6%, and bus sales surged by 23.3%, while new truck sales declined by 4% compared to last year.
Diesel still dominates the CV market, but electrically chargeable vehicles have risen in all segments. Electric vans saw a modest 4.2% growth, now capturing 6.2% of the total van market. Electric truck sales rose by 29.5%, now capturing nearly 2% of the market. Electric buses recorded a 10.3% growth, with their market share at just over 12% of all buses sold.
Manufacturers alone cannot tackle the decarbonisation challenge. To advance the transition, policies that support both supply and demand of vehicles are needed. Policy makers must establish the right conditions, including a dense network of suitable charging stations, effective carbon pricing, and incentives for transport operators.
