Fremont woman sentenced for misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide – Omaha World-Herald

A Fremont woman who entered a plea of no contest to a charge of misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide was sentenced Thursday to 10 days in the Douglas County Jail.
Amy Fernau, 54, was found guilty of causing the death of 24-year-old Abby Olberding of Carroll, Iowa, on Sept. 13, 2023. Fernau also was sentenced to serve two years of probation upon her release. She had faced up to one year in jail and $1,000 fine.
Investigators from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office determined that Fernau was driving a Jeep Gladiator pickup truck left of center when she caused a head-on collision about 8 a.m. near 267th Street and West Center Road. The pickup crossed the center line and hit a Chevrolet Impala driven by Olberding.
Olberding was pronounced dead at the scene. Her vehicle was heavily damaged and slid about 10 feet off of the road into a ditch before coming to a rest on its top.

According to her obituary, Olberding was a 2023 graduate of Clarkson College, where she studied physical therapy. She was working in Omaha as a physical therapist assistant at the time of her death.
